Do less and get more of what you want.

Updated: Nov 15, 2018

We get swept up in it every day, and see it all around us; the pressure to pack more and more into our days in an effort to reap the promised benefits of achieving goals through unrealistic time frames.  Often, it’s hard to get off the ‘treadmill’, step back from the intense pressure of chasing the myth of having it all and reflect on how we really feel about the way we live.

If you were to stop for a moment and view your life through the lens of an objective observer, how would you feel about what you see?  If you are lost in a world of busyness and stress maybe its time to change things up a bit.  It’s your life and therefore your choice.  So, before you get too busy again, here’s 4 tips to get more of what you want in your life and less of what isn’t working for you.

COACHING TOOLS TAKEAWAY

This weeks coaching tools takeaway section provides you with 4 coaching tools.

The Big Picture

The Big Picture

Are your daily, weekly, monthly activities aligned and adding value to the overall direction of the life you want to live?  If not, review the things you could do less of or eliminate altogether and you’ve instantly freed up some time to spend on what’s important to you.  Create a yearly plan aligned to your goals and break it down into manageable chunks.  Find a way that works for you.  A quick and easy approach to getting started is to sort your goals into quarterly, monthly, weekly and daily actions.  This way you are making regular progress on your goals, seeing results and getting a healthy dose of inspiration to keep going.

Bootcamp Approach

Bootcamp Approach

Breaking habits that no longer serve you, takes time.  The unconscious behaviours our brains get so good at, need to be unravelled and replaced with those you want.  The Bootcamp approach can be an effective way to kickstart speedy change initially, through conscious and repetitious non-negotiable tasks repeated every day, until the new behaviours become habit.  Step one sets you up with direction and a process and the Bootcamp mindset takes charge of the sometimes unhelpful musings of our minds.

Focus & Flow

Focus and Flow

Narrowing your focus to the things that are most important to you, means you prioritise them and then the magic happens – you have to let some of the other stuff go. Once you are on this path it makes it easier to set boundaries.  Maybe that means spending less time on social media or whatever it is for you.  Setting aside specific time for priority tasks without distraction will also help get you in the flow, which is a wonderful state of being, immersed in the task with a heightened sense of focus.  You may just do your best work here.

Use Your Strengths

Use Your Strengths

Identifying and using your strengths is an effective and rewarding way to keep focus and momentum going and unleash your greatest potential. It really works and is backed up by research.  Several studies report that people who have an opportunity to focus on their strengths every day are six times more likely to be highly engaged in their jobs and experience greater quality of life overall.  Engaging in activities you are good at can significantly improve confidence, and job satisfaction.  But what about your weaknesses?  That will be the subject of another blog, but again the research strongly suggests that we don’t ignore them but rather finds effective ways to manage them.  Check out the free character strengths survey..
